Genting Trip Takeaways

So we brought our 5 year old across the causeway to Genting Highlands over the long weekend and there are some information which I think may be useful for families travelling with young children. Checking-in Being budget conscious, we stayed at First World Hotel. There is a board showing what room types are currently available so you can check-in. The kiosks are quite buggy and we had to approach the staff thats stationed around the kiosk to help. Have some cash in hand to make payment for the taxes as the kiosks that accept credit cards can be buggy. For the uninitiated, Tower 1 is the nearest and Tower 3 is the furthest. Sometimes with a kid in tow, every step counts. Convenience stores There are 7-eleven and family mart located so we are able to buy packet milk for the little one. For other toiletries, there is Guardian and watsons which can satisfy most needs. The bottled water is cheaper at the pharmacies. Payment There is rarely any shop that does not accept cashless paymen...

8% Cashback on MYR spend

Wef 1st June Maybank has launched a promo giving 8% cashback on all MYR spends on their Maybank Family and Friends card.  Note that the 8% and the usual category 8% do not stack. Meaning all MYR spending that do not fall into the 5 selected categories or above the $312.50 cap will then get the 8% discount. This means after fees of 3.25% we can get up to 4.75% cashback. So for existing cardholders, this is the card to use for your Malaysia trips. If we want to squeeze more out of the card, we can pair it with amaze and use amaze card on the selected categories instead.

Last Call : Grabpay Top-up

Background Amex cards are the last cards that provides miles/ cashback for Grabpay topup. Even after Grabpay nerf AXS payments, I still use it for merchants that only accept Paynow QR code payments.  However, Amex has announced at the start of March that there will be no more cashback awarded for Grabpay wallet topups with effect from 4 April 2023. So this is a reminder to top-up your Grabpay wallets to cater for your next 1-2 months spending. We will need to buffer a few days for transaction posting as well. Too much will not be advisable especially in this high interest rate environment. So.. What's next? After this nerf, only UOB's Absolute Cashback card's 0.3% cashback is left. I will probably still use it to top-up my Grabpay wallet since no fish prawn also good in this case probably shrimp. I am also still using this card to pay for my kid's MOE Kindergarten school fees for the 1.7% cashback. Another use case will be using the top-up to hit the minimum spending on...

Comparing Complimentary Travel Insurance (Singapore)

While making travel plans, travel insurance are usually bought for peace of mind, especially for longer trips. Some people like me tried to minimize cost by using comparison sites. Now I am trying to see if I can save on this all together by making do with complimentary travel insurance that comes with credit cards. Do note that we are only comparing "entry level" credit cards where annual fee generally can be waived. Sum Assured The headline sum assured is frequently quoted by credit card issuers as a tagline but to me this is not as useful for our usual travel considerations as this should be covered by our own term and accident insurance. Still, some people may like to have a larger amount for peace of mind. For some issuers, the amount depends on cards. Sum Assured (up to) Travel Inconvenience Medical expense Example of card UOB 500,000 No No UOB One Credit Card Standard Chartered 500,000 No No SMART VISA SIGNATURE Citibank 1,000,000 Yes Yes Citi Cash Back+ World Masterca...
